The Road to Canterbury

The Revels

musicians Here at the Crossroads at Canterbury will be held a marvellous Harvest Faire.

On the occasion of Michaelmas, at Harvest time, come share in the bounteous food and drink and the wealth of industry and arts within this Shire and our surrounding Baronies. Display your handicrafts and wares, ply your trades of music and mummings, fly your fluttering banners and trumpet your tournament bouts to the populace great and small. All are welcome to the Revelry!

Some scheduling notes:
The Relics & Reliquaries pavilion will be staffed from 11am to 4pm. Participants are asked to deliver their items to the Relics & Reliquaries display pavilion between 11am and noon, and to remove them no later than 4pm. Judges will be Their Excellencies, Baron Lyle Fitzwilliam of Bergental, and Baron Jehan du Lac of Carolingia. Judging will take place between 1pm and 2pm at Their Excellencies' discretion.

The Poetry Challenge will take place in the Tavern after the feast.

The Inn

At the Crossroads will be an Inn offering hospitality throughout the event. On Friday night the Inn will sell a hearty Pilgrim's Supper for the first 50 callers. For $5, receive a hearty stew with bread, cheese, sausage and whatever inspires our cook. Throughout the weekend visit the Inn for respite and refreshing (non-alcoholic) beverages at no charge. Perhaps a few musicians will come to entertain the company!

Food at the Faire

On Saturday, a dayboard (included with site fee, no extra cost) will be available at various booths around the Faire on Saturday, provided by Mistress Eleanor le Brun.

Merchants

Sundry vendors of goods will be arrayed along the public way from the Crossroads to the Tourney Field. Among them will be several artisans building the very wares they are selling, who  will look forward to demonstrating their arts!

When it is available, a list of merchants will be provided.

If you are interested in selling wares at the event, please contact Teresa Giani, Merchants' Liaison.
Information for merchants desiring to sell their goods at the event.

If you would like to demonstrate your craft, please contact Mistress Sarah Davies, our Artisans' coordinator.

Entertainments

Throughout the weekend, the Faire will feature buskers and performers of all stripes: singers, mummers, storytellers, fools, poets, magicians and musicians! If we're fortunate, and watch very carefully, we may see a troupe of Dancing Bears cavorting in the marketplace…

Assorted fine musical presentations, mummings, storytelling circles, and other performances have been prepared for the day. Our staff of Town Criers will cry the site to herald each performance before it begins.

The Riddle Quest
At Canterbury shall be held a Quest
to challenge those whose wits are at their best
In this one day, alone or in a team,
to answer all the riddles you must scheme.
They shall be hidden well throughout the land:
The first one shall be found in Chaucer's hand.

Poetry Challenge
Master Christian Lansinger von Jaueregk wishes it to be known that he desires to hear stories told over drink at the Inn.  Write a poem that tells a tale, in a style from the time of Chaucer or earlier, and recite it unto the company.  Documentation will not be necessary.
Memorization will not be necessary.  The piece must be your own work (yes, rendering a well-known story into a poem is acceptable).

The Poetry Challenge will take place in the Tavern after the feast.

Reliquary Contest: Best Reliquary in Any Medium

Artists, gentlefolk and commoners alike -- here is your chance for immortalization in the history of our event! We will be hosting a contest for the best reliquary in any medium. The contest is simple: make a container for a relic.  Prizes will be awarded for most authentic, and most humorous.

Other entertainments include:
  • Cut and Thrust Demonstration
  • Dancing Bears
  • Artisan Demonstrations
